Poorhouse Cemeteries Survey

Tuesday, September 12, 2023

What's Happening at the Poorhouse Cemeteries?

Between September 12-14, the County Historian's Office is facilitating a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey of both the Old and New Poorhouse Cemeteries.

  • The GPR survey is completely non-invasive, and no burials will be disturbed in the process. The GPR technology detects underground soil disturbances and inconsistencies, which can locate tree roots, buried foundations, or even burials. Age is a factor, so older burials may no longer be detectable.
  • The Historian's Office anticipates many unmarked graves to be located during the GPR survey. Probable burials will be field-marked during the survey. Then, permanent metal disks will be installed to mark each newly discovered grave. While we will not know who is buried there, we will get a better sense of the extent and boundaries of the cemetery.
  • Visitors are welcome to observe the process during the survey. Please give the GPR operator space to work and do not disturb any field markings. These will be necessary to accurately mark the graves with permanent markers.
  • If you have questions about the cemetery or the GPR process, please ask the County Historian staff if they are on site this week, or contact the County Historian's Office. Brochures are also available from most of the businesses in the Three Bricks near the cemeteries.
