September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Blue Prostate Cancer Awareness Month Facebook Post

GENESEO, N.Y., Sept. 19, 2022 – One of the leading causes of death in men, prostate cancer is a highly treatable disease if detected early. September is National Prostate Awareness Month and Livingston County is committed to helping reduce the number of prostate cancer related deaths by providing residents with easy access to screenings.

A small walnut-sized gland, prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer especially in men aged 65 or older.  Many prostate cancers grow slowly and are confined to the gland itself, however, some types are more aggressive and can spread to other organs within the body if left unchecked.

While prostate cancer may not cause any symptoms in its early stages, more advanced stages can cause trouble urinating, decreased force in the stream of urine, blood in urine or semen, bone pain, erectile dysfunction and more.

Livingston County is encouraging people to be proactive and to ask your doctor for their recommendations on establishing a prostrate screening schedule that takes into account your individual risk factors and family history.
