Livingston County Piloting New Way to Take Civil Service Exam for Correctional Officers

Co-Exam-PR

GENESEO, N.Y., Nov. 21, 2022 – Livingston County is looking to fill numerous Correctional Officer vacancies and is pioneering what it hopes will become a new tool in its recruitment efforts. Livingston County is one of just 12 counties from across New York State selected to participate in a newly formed test format by the New York State Civil Service Department.

Under the pilot program, the County will administer a Training and Experience exam, which is used when New York State Civil Service has determined that specific education or experience is a good predictor of success within a specific role.  Outside of the pilot, a candidate would be required to sit for an exam and complete a series or written questions.  While applicants will still be required to apply to sit for an exam, under the Training and Experience format, applicants will instead be sent a link to a job-related questionnaire inquiring about their education, work experience, training they may have previously received and any volunteer involvement in areas related to the Correctional Officer position.

"This pilot program will enable Livingston County to have all qualified applicants pass the examination,” added Kate Hill, the County’s Director of Human Resources.  “We anticipate the turnaround on the test scores will be much quicker than the current testing process, which will allow us to provide the Sheriff's Office with eligible candidates much faster than before."

A much more efficient method of testing qualified candidates, only those who meet the position’s minimum requirements will have access to the Training and Experience format.  As a result, all who complete the required questionnaire will pass the exam and an eligibility list will be created based on the ensuing results.

"We are excited to be a part of this pilot testing program," stated Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty.  "Hopefully this will allow our candidate pool to grow and, in turn, make our team stronger."

The new pilot program is just one of several newly minted initiatives within the County as the Board of Supervisors recently approved a resolution waiving civil service exam fees for veterans.

Anyone interested in applying for the Correctional Officer exam, must do so by November 29, 2022.  The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office will be holding a recruitment event from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, November 21 inside the lobby of the County Jail located at 4 Court Street, Geneseo, N.Y. 14454.  Pizza will be provided and attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer session with Deputies from the Correctional Services Bureau.
