West Sparta, N.Y., Aug. 21, 2023 — The town of West Sparta is now home to a new community playground and park thanks in-part to American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds distributed by Livingston County.
The County received these ARPA funds as a result of the pandemic when Congress created this federal bill to support projects that provide for economic resiliency and enhance communities negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier this year in January, the County’s Board of Supervisors authorized a portion of the County’s ARPA funds to be distributed equally among its 17 towns to support the creation of or improvement to parks, trails or other forms of outdoor recreation, and/or tourism efforts.
West Sparta has been working to develop the land behind its town hall into a park since 2016. Donations and community volunteers helped to build a picnic pavilion and an Americans with Disabilities Act-approved sidewalk behind West Sparta’s town hall. The ARPA funds provided through Livingston County have been instrumental in helping the project reach its conclusion with the installation of a new community playground, said Sue Erdle, West Sparta Town Supervisor.
“Our park and playground are a true example of community spirit. We are proud of the fact that all of this was done without taking any money from our town budget,” said Erdle.
The new playground is located behind the West Sparta town hall and features slides, swings, ladders, a bridge, towers, a rock climbing wall, and more. Prior to its completion, the nearest playground for West Sparta’s youth was located several miles away in Dansville.
“Investing in green spaces and outdoor recreational opportunities strengthens our communities for all,” said Board Chair David LeFeber. “We’re proud to support these parks and recreation initiatives in our County’s 17 towns. These projects are a reflection of our commitment to healthier and more vibrant communities throughout Livingston County.”
