Livingston County Set to Celebrate the Annual Genesee Valley Hunt Races

GVHR

GENESEO, N.Y., OCTOBER 10, 2023 – One of the most anticipated traditions of the fall is set to take place later this month as people from all over the United States will descend upon Livingston County to take in the Genesee Valley Hunt Races, which open on Saturday, October 14, 2023.

"The Genesee Valley Hunt Races are like no other event in our area. What began over 125 years ago as a grand day of picnicking with friends and neighbors has evolved into a multi-faceted day of fun for young and old alike,” added the Genesee Valley Hunt Races Committee through a statement.  “It’s a day that combines tradition, community and family all in a beautiful outdoor setting on conserved farmland in the Genesee Valley. Tailgating remains a huge part of the day and it’s still the only event in the state where spectators can watch sanctioned steeplechase races over timber jumps.”

An event that dates back to the late 1800s, the Genesee Valley Hunt Races have become a tradition in Livingston County and have grown into an annual event that results in a significant boom for local tourism, small businesses, hotels, local restaurants and more. The Livingston County Chamber of Commerce estimated that that annual economic impact from the Genesee Valley Hunt Races is in excess of $200,000 in the County as well as neighboring communities.  In addition, the philanthropic impression from the event has helped to raise over $60,000 for local charities and organizations. This year’s beneficiary will be the United Way of Greater Rochester and Finger Lakes.   Proceeds will also benefit the Geneseo Rotary while funds generated from tailgate competition entry fees will be donated to the Avon Food Pantry and the Geneseo/Groveland Emergency Food Pantry.

A great way for the entire family, including dogs, to spend the day in a beautiful setting just north of the Village of Geneseo, the Hunt Races feature some of the finest steeplechase trainers on the eastern seaboard competing for a share of over $30,000 in prize money.  Horses aren’t the only source of competition, however, as the event features several other races including terrier and wiener dog races, a jumping contest, agility courses, sled dog demonstrations and the renowned Parade of the Genesee Valley Hunt foxhounds.

While the races may take center stage, there are countless other activities and attractions designed for the entire family. Attendees can learn more about local agriculture including a meet and greet with farm animals, take a pony ride, compete in stick horse races and more.  Additionally, the event features several options for food including local vendors, tents and tailgates.  There will also be ample opportunity to imbibe in some of the region’s finest beer, wine and spirits while enjoying live music.

The Genesee Valley Hunt Races also offers an opportunity for local crafters and artisans to showcase their items, educate their customers about their respective businesses and offer items for sale.
