Livingston County Celebrates National Fire Prevention Month

GENESEO, N.Y., Oct. 17, 2023 – Livingston County is proud to celebrate National Fire Prevention Month – an initiative designed to spread awareness and educate the public on the risks of deadly fires and commemorate those who have lost their lives to these tragedies.

Founded in 1922 by the National Fire Protection Association, Fire Prevention Month was originally established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire in 1871.  Today, it’s focus is raising awareness on fire safety and educating families, students and communities across the United States.

Fire prevention month is the ideal time to check your home to ensure that fire extinguishers along with smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly and to develop an escape plan should the unthinkable happen.  Ensuring that your devices are working drastically reduces your risk of death and injury as a result of fire or gas leaks within your home.

Locally, the Livingston County Office of Emergency Management provides support, training and other resources to municipalities in an effort to ensure that they’re properly prepared to handle natural and man-made emergencies. The EOS offers various training courses and field instruction throughout the year and provides residents with educational materials including fire prevention tips for inside the home, how to plan and practice a fire escape plan, chimney fire safety, space heater safety and more.

To learn more about these initiatives and others, please visit the County’s Office of Emergency Management website.
