Shop Smart, Shop Local: LivCo Loot Promotes Neighborhood Small Businesses

livcoloot

GENESEO, N.Y., Nov. 3, 2023 — Livingston County’s Economic Development office is encouraging residents to support area businesses and shop locally this holiday season through the new LivCo Loot program.

The Economic Development office, Tourism office, and participating Livingston County businesses will distribute LivCo Loot coins, branded wooden tokens, valued at $5 each. Shoppers can then spend the LivCo Loot coins at participating businesses throughout the County. The coins are good for store credit only and shop owners will not give change if the purchase is less than $5.

Part of Livingston County's Buy Local Campaign, LivCo Loot incentivizes consumers to put their purchasing power to work within the County’s nine villages and 17 towns. When residents spend locally, there are numerous benefits for the local economy, said Economic Development Director Bill Bacon.

“When we buy from independent, locally-owned businesses, rather than national chain stores, a much greater portion of our money remains in the local economy aiding our neighbors in need, supporting our local farms, and ultimately strengthening our whole community,” explained Bacon. “For every $100 you spend at a locally owned business, $68 recirculates and remains in our local economy. Only $43 remains in our community when it’s spent at a national chain.”

Economic Development and Tourism staff will be on hand at many of the upcoming holiday festivals around the County passing out LivCo Loot. Participating business will also distribute the coins through their own in-store promotions. The full list of local businesses participating in the LivCo Loot program includes:
